Aglets: More Than Meets the Eye
Have you ever wondered about that plastic cap on the ends of your shoelaces? If you are like me, such seemingly trivial things are actually quite interesting. I was surprised to learn that this tiny marvel is known as a “aglet”. As we all know, they will eventually succumb to the test of time. Try as we might to avoid the inevitability, the caps will fray and disappear. The end result is a shoelace that represents a shadow of its former glory (and usefulness). As I was brought up in a rather poor family, my grandmother tried to extend the lifespan of these plastic tips by wrapping them in plastic. Why is this so important and how is it possible that I possess such memories from so long ago?
The fact of the matter is that the things we choose to protect tend to last longer. Of course, even the strongest items will eventually fail. Still, HOW and WHEN are just as important as WHY. This applies just as much to our lives as it does to those tiny aglets. We can lose our health suddenly and unexpectedly if it is not cared for properly. Ask yourself this question: do you want to live a healthier, happier and longer life? We all do. Yet only a few take real actions for it.
We regularly service our cars, but forget about our physical and mental health, that can wait. We don’t talk about it as we don’t want to look weak. This is wrong! We must take care of our health. Regular physical activity and healthy eating is a good start, but never forget about the soul. Our mental, emotional and spiritual well being. In other words as grandma taught me, please protect your aglets!
Embrace a healthy lifestyle, let’s make a difference.
